AFLV Council Compass


The AFLV Council Compass program is a developmental program for councils that assesses operations, critical thinking, ability to address issues unique to the community culture, and new ideas and initiatives a council creates and sustains that make a difference.


Directional Areas

Council Compass will ask your councils to reflect on their achievements in four, directional areas:

  • Accountability: A council’s ability to follow through, manage responsibly, and expect high standards from the community it governs.
  • Collaboration: The ability to work successfully among the council, chapters, staff and larger community.
  • Education: The ability to educate all council members about necessary, relevant, and progressive topics.
  • Innovation: The council’s ability to go beyond what has been created or achieved before. Critical and creative thinking that leads to cutting edge programs and initiatives.


Directional Rubric & Application

Within each directional area, there are 3 levels of achievement. From level 1 to level 3, the council must show a deeper level of performance and understanding. These levels are highlighted in the Council Compass Rubric.

The Council Compass is an entirely digital program using a common application regardless of council type. Questions will be crafted in a way that allows for answering a question regardless of council. The rubric will act as a guide to how questions will be scored, and multiple award opportunities will be available.

Later this year, AFLV will offer webinars introducing councils to the new program on a deeper level and will answer questions to set councils up for success to complete your application. Additionally, the entire bank of questions for all four directional themes will be added to this page in the next few months. 



In order to be eligible your council must have paid your annual membership subscription fee; no exceptions. Councils that have not paid membership dues as of the awards deadline will not be eligible to receive awards.


Councils must send at least one delegate to one regional conference. Any council that submits an application but does not send at least one delegate to one of the two regional conferences must pay an application fee of $25 per category. Please submit payment with your application.


Award Levels

Each year at the regional conferences, we recognize outstanding Greek, Interfraternity, Multicultural, National Pan-Hellenic, and Panhellenic Councils with the presentation of awards.


Online tips

We're excited to have you try the new online application process! To access our online system go here. We’ve put together some helpful tips for all our applicants.

  • Read! Read the instructions, FAQ’s, and questions carefully. Seems obvious right? Don’t assume you know what a question is asking or how to use the online system. Read, read, read!
  • Be clear. Remember, our judges have never been to your campus. Highlight pieces in your documentation and provide direct links to where judges can find things. You want to make their job as easy as possible.
  • It is ok not to be perfect. There is no perfect council! You may realize that you do not have answers for every question. That is ok! This process is not only about awards, but also assessment. The most valuable thing you can bring home are tips to improve your community. So answer honestly and look forward to hearing back from the judges.
  • Plan ahead. All applications (online and paper binders) are due Friday, Dec. 1. Chances are you will be heading off campus for Thanksgiving break or busy with exams in the coming weeks, so start working on your applications early!
