Are you interested in starting a chapter of the Fraternal Values Society? Check out the frequently asked questions below to learn more. If you'd like more information, contact us here.

Why start a chapter of FVS?

Because you want change! Okay, it is more than that. In your fraternity and sorority community, there are others just like you who want to strengthen the values conversation but aren't sure how to begin. FVS provides the forum to have these conversations, promote change and implement actions.

What are the benefits to my fraternity/sorority community?

Bringing FVS to your campus will provide a home and constant force for the advancement of values congruence, alignment, and the continued relevance of fraternities and sororities. It will empower individuals to live their lives according to fraternal values. This organization can also provide assistance for communities struggling to reach these standards through mentoring and facilitation training. Members of FVS will be trained on how to be effective mentors and facilitators in their fraternity/sorority community.

How do I start a chapter?

Campuses interested in starting a chapter should complete the charter registration form found here. There is a chartering fee of $500 that includes Ritual equipment, recruitment materials, educational programming, a chapter manual, and additional resources to get the chapter started. Each new member will pay a one-time Initiation fee of $50.

Is there a minimum member requirement?

The minimum requirement for all FVS chapters is 20 members maintained throughout the year. When a charter is first purchased, and a group is initially formed, it is recommended that there be at least 8 members (4 serving as officers and 4 serving on committees). It is an expectation that chapters have a minimum of 20 members one year after being chartered.

Do you have to be a member of AFLV to be a member of FVS?

No. Campuses may have a FVS chapter without being member subscribers of the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values. Additionally, chartering a chapter is not tied to which undergraduate fraternal leadership conference you attend.

What are the FVS membership requirements?

FVS members can be anyone initiated and affiliated with a social fraternity or sorority. Members must be in good standing with their organization and in good academic standing at their host institution.

Can I be a member of Order of Omega, Gamma Sigma Alpha, and/or Rho Lambda and be a member of FVS?

Of course! You can hold membership in FVS and other academic societies or membership organizations.

Do I have to be a current member of a fraternity or sorority to join?

Yes. Membership in FVS is open to undergraduate fraternity/sorority members and campus advisors. Individual chapters of FVS may select honorary members as they see fit, as outlined in the FVS governing documents. Honorary members do not need to be affiliated with fraternity or sorority organizations.

How is FVS different from Order of Omega, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Rho Lambda, or other honor organizations?

Honorary organizations are just as their name implies - organizations that recognize accomplishments. These organizations exist to pay tribute to the success of the individual members. FVS is different. Membership is not tied to accomplishment, status or positional leadership. Instead, it is connected to a commitment to furthering the ethical values upon which fraternities and sororities were founded.

Do I have to be an initiated members of my fraternity/sorority for a certain length of time before I can be a member of FVS?

No. You do not need to be initiated for an specified period of time before you can become a member of FVS. We encourage freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors to all participate!

What's the time commitment for members?

That depends on you. How much time are you willing to put in to make a difference on your campus? We recommend setting meetings and check-ins regularly to keep the momentum going. Basically, with big change comes commitment.
