Honduras 2012

AFLV is excited to partner with Phi Delta Theta Fraternity for a Phi Delta Theta members only global service immersion experience in Honduras May 19-26, 2012.

Phi Delta Theta undergraduate members from across the U.S. and Canada will come together for a week a service, cultural immersion, and values exploration. Participants will work alongside the people of Honduras on various building projects. Participants will also have the opportunity to interact with local children at an orphanage and/or with school children in the communities we visit, and learn more about the cultural and political history of the country.

AFLV and Phi Delta Theta will partner with Heart to Honduras to plan and implement the service effort. Like most aid organizations in Central America, Heart to Honduras is a holistic, Christian organization. The organization's goal is to address the various needs of the poor in Honduras and beyond. The organization focuses its efforts in providing Honduras's impoverished with: food, clothing, housing, healing, and hope.

This trip provides brothers the opportunity to go beyond global awareness to action. The Global Service Immersion Trip is an opportunity to use the world as a living classroom and to explore new cultures with traditions and customs that stand in great contrast to our own. Traveling with a purpose and having the opportunity to engage in meaningful service work enriches the individual, helps others, and builds connections between brothers.  This global service immersion trip will provide an opportunity for service learning, cultural exchange, awareness building, language building, reflection, and self-development for participants.

This experience is open to undergraduate members of Phi Delta Theta. The priority registration deadline is March 15, 2012.  Early registrations are strongly encouraged. Notification of participation will be made on a rolling basis in order to allow ample time to arrange plane travel, secure passports, etc. It is recommended that interested participants begin to compile necessary documents needed for passport application early. More information on travel arrangements, passports, health needs, and more will be sent after registration is complete.

The immersion trip experience is $1,100 per participant plus the cost of round-trip airfare from your home airport. Participants are strongly encouraged to fundraise to help cover their costs.  Using the Iron Phi fundraising system (begin by clicking on "Become an Iron Phi"), service trip participants have the unique opportunity to raise the necessary funds for the trip as well as additional funds to become an Iron Phi if desired (an additional $1,000). A participant can become an Iron Phi during the trip by raising a total of $2,100 and participating in an athletic event during the trip.  If a participant raises an amount between $1,100 and $2,100, those dollars above $1,100 will carry over to the participant's future Iron Phi fundraising efforts.

Lodging, transportation once in Honduras, all meals, and supplies are included in the participation fee. Participants need to bring additional spending money (no more than $50-$75) as well as $35 to set aside for the required airport departure fee upon leaving the country.
